Notably, not all subjects listed on the LSCH website appear in gutenberg_works. It seems the safest strategy is to grepl for a general term and refine from there, as in the example above.
‘LCC’ is another subject system. Clicking the link gives you a list of subjects and their corresponding subject codes. Gutenberg does not consistently index LCC subjects at sublevels, so it is best practice to search by general subject. Let’s take a look at texts on forestry.
forest <- gutenberg_subjects %>% filter(subject == "SD")
forest
gutenberg_id | subject_type | subject |
---|---|---|
11587 | lcc | SD |
17645 | lcc | SD |

It looks like there are 10 entries under forestry. But do they have text? Here’s some code that filters gutenberg_metadata for items matched by gutenberg_id in my object ‘forest’, only returning those that have text.
test <- filter(gutenberg_metadata, gutenberg_id %in% forest$gutenberg_id, has_text ==
TRUE)

It looks like all 10 forestry titles have text. Let’s double check. Here, I have copied the above code and changed has_text to FALSE.
test1 <- filter(gutenberg_metadata, gutenberg_id %in% forest$gutenberg_id, has_text == FALSE)
glimpse(test1)

We can play with these datasets, joining by specific variables or just gluing together. Below, I have included a code snippet in which I demonstrate some of this manipulation, annotated below.
start <- c("Tolstoy, Leo, graf", "Dostoyevsky, Fyodor") #create character vector of authors of interest
new <- gutenberg_works() %>% filter(author %in% start) #give me everything in gutenberg by the authors listed in start write it into a file called new
